Problem Statement

For my Human-Centered Design course, my team partnered with HP to explore how digital wearables could act as a social beacon to signal thoughts and beliefs. After ideating 70+ product ideas, I refined them using a weighted matrix and eventually decided to tackle this problem:

How might we employ wearable technology so that individuals with autism can easily communicate their emotional and physical status nonverbally?

Solution Scope

After interviewing children with autism, parents, and autism specialists, I learned that they highly desired a device that easily communicates a child's emotional or physical status while considering all aspects of inclusive design. Therefore, I created:

An emotionally communicative device between child and caretaker that is expressive, simple, and not overstimulating.

Introducing SignaLink

SignaLink opens up a discussion between parent and child.

When the child presses the button, the light color will change, signaling an emotional/physical need.

A parent's pair device will be instantly updated with the color, signaling a change in their child's emotions.
